Controversial

You uncivilized barbarian. Continue to cope with the fact that Britannia conquered half the civilized world (British Raj, etc) and forced the remaining half to kneel to her (Great Qing, etc).

Empire

The sun has never set on the British Empire. We still hold colonies and commonwealths across the known world. The Royal Navy is the second most formidable fighting force to grace the seas today.

London is the financial capital of the world with 78% of all FX trades occuring in London and our universities holds preeminent/supreme status.

Please continue to make a buffoon of yourself with the fact that your thirteen filthy colonial deserts and swamps were abandoned by my aristocratic ancestors because it was too expensive and not worth our time to get your little ragtag group of continental barbarian musketeers and cowboys to kneel before Britannia's supremacy.

Forever life in fear and shame, upstarts of the thirteen colonies, and despair when burdened with the knowledge that you shall never attend classes within the gilded halls of Cambridge and ivory towers of Oxford.

i just read this entire thing with a british accent and now i am laughing uncontrollably

We let our colonies be independent because approximately 56 empires bankrupted and crippled themselves just to empty our treasury in a series of centuries-long proxy wars, conventional wars and espionage. Also the fact that having colonies were no longer profitable and too many barbarians tried to revolt/, killing our exalted infantry standards (whose death was certainly not worth keeping 5 square km of land in Australia's deserts or Canada's tundras/glaciers).

Merely a momentary cultural and geopolitical setback that will turn around once this new-fangled "human rights", "equality", "stop colonialism" and "abolish slavery" trend is over. Britannia shall rule the civilised world once more, and if not Britannia, certainly not the cultural cesspool and infectious ideology of the her former thirteen colonies in the New World.

Either Britannia, British Raj or Great Qing shall take global hegemon status once more within the turn of the century and bear the noble burden to civilise this backwater world yet again.

So, you start with grouping the whole race to everything you disagree with? I never invaded your country, nor do I believe in treating people like crap. Neither should you.

SafariJoe, wins again!

Idk why but I feel like, contrary to the rest of the world, there is a much higher proportion than usual of people in the extremes, of anything (wealth, "intelligence"...)

You have a shit ton of antivaxxers and anti mask people who didn't wear a mask unless they had covid (and they will still go out). I don't really understand why but there is a trend, again higher than in other countries I have been in, to deliberately do the opposite of what the government says (about anything).  And this is not your average retard, there is plenty of people in IB like this.

Finally, I got to say that the most posh mfs in the planet are in the UK. It is like people here tend to be more x than in other countries, at least of what I have seen.

Needless to say, there is plenty of great ppl, but I feel like there are still a big % in the spectrums

Maybe because British people are not interested in those jobs?

Not everyone want to work in finance.

Also, most mainland Europeans come to the UK and not the other way around. Why is that?

Kind of agree with you. but do you think it's because of their heritage i.e during the times of pre-WWI it was considered gentlemen didn't go to work? I mean have their aristocratic and snobbish genes made them a bit unprofessional and unmotivated when it comes wrong , especially in an industry like IBD

I spent some time in many areas of England (not elsewhere) in the UK. The people are very different, depending on where, how and who you meet.

London: Very international and not "really" British. A huge portion of Londoners were not even born in London, they are either from another region in the UK or are immigrants from abroad. Loads of Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Muslims, Russians, Polish, etc. |
Due to Brexit, EU passport holders still exist, but difficult to settle there now if they didn't move to the UK before the cutoff. EU passport holders now need a visa sponsorship which can be hard to get unless a company files this for you.

Essex:
well, where do I start? Interesting people, but really not mainstream. Very native to the location, different accents throughout Essex - on average, lower educational attainment, lower average income, different view on life. I have personally seen more substance abuse and more tattoos, but generally good people if you avoid the crime hot spots. Essex can be pricey, my flat was 1,500GBP pcm, same price as my flat in E14/Canary Wharf later.

East Midlands:
I lived here briefly and just found the area more boring, the people were ok. There wasn't much to do IMO.

Overall, the UK is a great place if you are from a developing country where a move might increase your standard of living drastically. If you are already in a developed nation and have a higher income/job security/quality of life, etc it might not be the best place to move to. It also depends on your job and industry - difficult to find this many high-profile IBD roles in other EU countries. Frankfurt, Zurich, etc are much smaller. Paris might be an option if you speak French.

Most US/Canadian expats I know through church or work are only in London for a year or two before they return home. they love the UK, but they wouldn't want to live there forever unless there is a strong reason (ie you get married to an English girl and she doesn't want to move or you have kids in the UK). These people are expats, not immigrants. They are using their overseas experience to boost their resume and job chances after returning home. It looks good on your resume.
