What is Miami like?

Inspired by the recent thread on Charlotte. Most of the info on WSO is dated so I thought it might be good to get a fresh thread to discuss the city.

Appreciate any thoughts on living/working in Miami, what the finance scene is like, etc.

Small M&A shops and a number of private equity groups (HIG, TriVest). Hedge funds have been moving down although it is unclear if those are just senior guys for tax purposes more so than juniors also taking up the opportunity. A good deal of private equity in the Palm Beach area as well which is not a good commute but is worth mentioning as SoFl.

Lots of private banking and wealth management - Spanish not required with the exception of the LatAm groups. Starwood and a number of real estate companies have sizable offices. BCG with a decent team down there as well.

Corporations with HQs off the top are Restaurant Brands International (owner of Popeyes, Burger King, Tim Hortons), Royal Caribbean, Lennar, Ryder, American Airlines, Bacardi.

Great party scene obviously. Fantastic weather 10 months of the year...12 if you can handle the heat. Moderate COL (low compared to NYC, LA, SF, but higher than Charlotte, Nashville, Jacksonville, etc).

EDIT: I understand I am biased. Grew up there and wish to return. Might not be the best place to start your career but after two years in NY/SF/CHI there are some great exit opportunities to MIA that might be the ideal combo between social / cost / weather / opportunity.

I love South Florida. I travel there a decent amount with work. It's a hop and a skip to the Florida Keys. Good fishing and diving. Spanish is definitely the second (sometimes first) language there. Would help to know some. It is my understanding that there is a huge emphasis on fitness and flaunting wealth.

Down side is there aren't too many good looking girls that live there....

Miami is my 3rd favorite US city behind NYC and San Diego, possibly tied with Chicago. I love latin food, latin people, the warmth, the beauty, all of it. if I was single, I'd have tried to live there.

whatever you do, when you get your first bonus, set a cap on your spending at e11even, it's easy to get carried away.

"Bizkitgto"Is this sarcasm? I thought Miami was notorious for beautiful women?

there are always an enormous amount of hotties in Miami, the question is are they locals or tourists? perhaps he's saying the locals aren't all that, and I have to plead ignorance, I don't know what % of hotties I've seen are local versus temporary stays. lots of rich hot slavic women come to have babies to get US citizenship for their kids, south americans come to do business/vacation, so it's very possible that the locals look more like dan lebatard and less like adriana lima. but the point is this - you go there, you will be overwhelmed with hotness. I'd put miami against any US city in that department

Most of what is said in the thread corresponds to my experience. Generally very warm people, lots of wealth flaunting, obsession with fitness. But you need to speak Spanish to enjoy it at its fullest.

Never discuss with idiots, first they drag you at their level, then they beat you with experience.
