Everyone seems to be going about their precautions in a different way. I had a remote meeting with a client of mine recently and he went to the market in full Covid gear, including a mask. This guy is in his 20s. When I have gone to the market, I have seen a few people with masks and about half of the people are wearing gloves. Just about every older person has been wearing gloves and so have most of the women. It is mostly the males who are not taking as many precautions. I do not own a mask. I have mostly been washing my hands frequently. I will admit that the more I surf the web and read stories about people who have died or who have been hospitalized, the more concerned I become about contracting the virus.

I also take a shower when I get back because why not? Other than that and my morning run (which I shower afterwards anyway for obvious reasons in conjunction with COVID concerns), I don’t leave my apartment.
meh. I just try to stay away from older people. The range of symptoms seems significantly platykurotic. I'd give myself a 75% chance of having had it before tests were available. It wasn't bad enough to take up medical resources. I'm social distancing and WFH. (Already checked, the ticker isn't available) If you want a recommendation for mitigating this gastrointestinal/respiratory disease I suggest high-proof alcohol taken orally at regular intervals.
I am on the fence about the extra precautions. If I were single, I really would not care all that much about going to the market or taking in a package, etc. With that said, I have a family and feel like I should take some extra precautions.
I am an asthmatic, so I've been one of the few people who has been wearing a mask or scarf when I venture out these past few weeks.
We take off our shoes as we enter our apartment, something we've always tended to do, but are now be even more conscious about it, especially seeing the number of discarded masks and latex gloves on the streets and sidewalks... and don't get me started on the ever-present habit of people spitting on sidewalks and streets.
We take outer layers of clothing along with any market purchases and leave them on our balcony for several hours or overnight.
We are washing our hands frequently and especially when we've been in any of the co-op common areas like the mail room, laundry room, recycling room, etc. and/or any time we come back into our home space from being outdoors, shopping, etc.
We are wiping down door knobs, key boards, home and cell phones, remotes, handles, etc. often as my husband is currently still physically going to work, while I've been working remotely since March 12.
We are avoiding seeing my parents beyond dropping off groceries and seeing them from their building hallway. Mom is immuno-suppressed due to being on weekly chemo treatments and my step-dad is diabetic and has a bad ticker/quintiple bypass.
We both suspect that we have each been contending with mild cases of covid, as we've each had a dry cough and mild tightness in the chest for several weeks, but no fever, no diarrhea, no dizziness, no body aches or any other symptoms.
Our neighbor across the hall from us died 2 weeks ago of covid-19 complications. He'd been hospitalized for over 2 weeks prior. He was 72 and had had MS for over 40 years, but that is little comfort to us, sweet guy and it's heartbreaking that his widow can't hold a funeral or service for him.
We also had a friend who is in her late 40's finally get released yesterday after being hospitalized for 11 days, tested positive. Poor thing couldn't breathe without oxygen due to asthma and bilateral pneumonia - she is a healthcare professional and suspects she was exposed at work.
My greatest fear is if I had/have it, is passing it on to someone who won't wind up with as mild a case, so wearing a mask when I'm out is just as much about me keeping my germs to myself as it is about keeping the germs of others away from me.
Are we over-reacting? Possibly, but it's no real inconvenience beyond taking a little extra time to play it safe. Just sucks that I really can't hang out with my mom [we last hung out on March 10 and normally we see each other 2x week], but thankfully she has my step-dad and my brother living with her and keeping her company... although whether they're keeping her sane is a different question, LMAO!

I don't accept the premise of the panic (though I agree with a month or so of shut down to get us caught up on medical supplies and rooms)--I think we'll find out in a year or so that many tens of millions of people will have contracted the virus with a mortality rate on par with an ugly flu season, with most of the deaths among those who were likely to die (statistically) in under 5 years.
With that said, I'm not being a d*ck about it. When I shop, I don't pick stuff up and read the labeling and put it back--I do my best to read labeling without touching packaging. If I mistakenly pick up the wrong product then I buy it (have done this multiple times) I'm respecting people's space. I'm obeying the quarantine. When I go out I go out around midnight for a jog when no one is around. I don't stare in wonder at the person wearing the mask. I don't take personally the person who refuses to get on the elevator with me. As always, I keep my clothes and apartment very clean. I wash my hands.
If everyone does their part individually, we can defeat this thing.
This is the kind of thinking that got the U.S. No.1 in total confirmed cases and soon-to-be No.1 in death of the COVID-19 Olympics. Do you live in a bubble and not realize people are dying in hundreds in NYC? Did you not read the news that 20% of people in ICU are between age 20-49 and without underlying conditions?

How, specifically, is my kind of "thinking" the cause of anything? I guarantee that I'm a cleaner person than you are (you could perform surgery in my apartment back in January) and I'm obeying all government orders and requests and obeying all social norms surrounding COVID-19.
What you're doing is giving statistics without producing any kind of context. "Confirmed cases" is an utterly irrelevant stat when many models suggest that you can multiply confirmed cases by at least 1 order of magnitude to get a rough idea of the real number of cases. 20% of people in ICUs may, in fact, be under 50, but that doesn't mean that 20% of people who die are under 50 (in Italy, for example, at one point at least, the median age of death was 80.5 years of age). And even if 20% of deaths were persons under 50, what if 50 million people had already had COVID-19 and we're talking about 20% of deaths under 50 on 10,000 deaths? Context matters
I'm not interested in your contextless stats. They are as valuable as saying the U.S. has more annual deaths than Germany--yeah, well, the U.S. has a population that is 3.5 times the size of Germany.

18-44 age group with no underlying conditions make up 0.5% of deaths in NYC.
Unfortunately I don't know where to buy masks or gloves, they're sold out everywhere..I'm not doing anything differently. To be honest I think a lot of the things that people are doing after COVID19 came about should be done all of the time. Washing your hands, showering, not touching anything unnecessarily. Besides not leaving the apartment at all, except for buying groceries or food, I am not doing anything else that's different.
I started taking COVID more seriously after watching a video of the inside of Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, and the nurse would talk about how healthy young people would have trouble breathing on their own even after spending numerous days at the hospital.
