What to do with idealistic people?

I've been assigned by my boss to welcome some new blood and show them the ropes. It appears that over 70 percent of them have an idealistic view of the world (both socially and politically). They are talented so I want to train them properly and have them be ready for actual work. But I also don't want to destroy their soul while doing so because they might end up hating the industry. Do anyone here have experience with these types? What do we do with them?

Train them on what they need to be trained on. You should not presume that simply because they are idealistic that this also means they are naive or easily swayed [or not]. Don't worry about "destroying their soul"... it's really not up to you how someone translates what you are presenting to them... we each translate and process things based on our life experiences and/or lackthereof in some instances.

One can certainly be idealistic and also still have a hardened, practical eye when it comes to things.

And if through your training of them, should they discover a more nuanced, more faceted and less simplistic view of the world, so much the better for them... you'll actually have done them a favor, even if it possibly means that they eventually decide down the road that this is not the career path for them.

Are you tasked with changing their world view? If not, don't worry about it.

Their worldview is none of my concern, the only problem is that if they have an unrealistic expectation of the world and how it ought to function. They might suffer more as a result of being met with the harsh reality of the real work. My boss is amazing at his job, but he his somewhat psychotic when it comes to models. I don't want my intern to break down and cry like one of my peers when I first started.

It's not your fault if they live in a bubble. Let your boss pop it or someone else will, eventually.
Never discuss with idiots, first they drag you at their level, then they beat you with experience.

"IdkLOL" I like to think I'm idealistic.... is that a bad thing?

Idealistically speaking, not really.

I would recommend buying them one way tickets to Port-au-prince, Haiti, with their flight landing at 1 a.m. Tell them the first person back without contacting government authorities gets a bonus, with extra points allowed for both the person with the most scars and if they make it to the us on a few tires bound together :).
