I would say that networking requires some shamelessness. Coming from a poor background with no real networking experience and attending a non-target, with limited connections in the industry, you really have no idea what you're doing striking out into the minefield that is networking. Every turn will result in a potential success or failure. The successes can be huge for you with the said background and the failures can literally blow you up (read banking interns pushing so hard they die); it's a high risk/high reward endeavor.
