I'd give yourself at least three months. And expect to have some apartments fall through. For example, when I was looking for apartments, my realtor would send me a list of apartments within my budget, I would tell them which ones I was interested in, and they would immediately get back to me saying it's no longer available.
Having a realtor became pointless so I would recommend just searching through streeteasy.com and set your preferences. then if something is available just take it. If you try to spend time touring it, it's going to get taken by the time you show up. Also expect to spend way more than you think you're about to.

Yes, which obviously has its risks, but it was either take it while I had the chance, or risk having someone else take it while I was waiting to schedule a tour. Also, try to live with roommates. Living alone was the worst single thing I have done to my bank account.
How unreasonable do you think it'd be to do a 3 day trip to NYC with a bunch of tours lined up? We'd show up with the intention to sign the lease on the spot if we like the place
