Where to stay in Vienna for a special occasion, can you help with any recommendations?
I’m off to Vienna for a few days soon for a special occasion. To be honest, I’m usually quite easy-going when it comes to hotels, but this time it’s somehow different. It shouldn't just be a decent room and a standard breakfast and that’s it. I’ve been to Vienna a few times before, but for this trip I’m being a bit fussy.
It doesn’t necessarily have to be right in the middle of Stephansplatz, by the way. I’d prefer somewhere where you can step out of the hotel in the evening and have a bit of a wander without having to travel anywhere else first. I probably wouldn’t even pay much attention to the star ratings. It’s hard to describe exactly what I’m looking for instead. Some hotels just have that certain something the moment you walk in, whilst others might just as easily be anywhere. I’m a bit of a sucker for old buildings, for example. Of course, I wouldn’t say no to a good spa either.
Where have you stayed in Vienna that was really good for an occasion like this?
Google is your friend
Your description fits the various Ringstrasse hotels really well. They sit on the edge of the historic city centre and are all housed in grand old buildings. Well-known names include the Sacher, the Imperial, the Bristol and the Grand Hotel. You're right in the city centre, but in the evening you can easily take a stroll through the nearby parks, public squares or shopping streets.
I'd thought about the Ringstrasse at first too, especially because of the old buildings. I'll have another closer look at the Sacher and the Imperial. Two or three streets further away would be just as fine for me though.
Park Hyatt and Rosewood are the two best hotels in town. I’m particularly fond of the former on Amhof. The Ritz is also great but maybe less atmosphere. Never stayed at the Sacher. The Imperial and Grand are getting a touch dated with smaller rooms,
I'd somehow always put the Park Hyatt and the Rosewood in the big classic luxury hotel category. Maybe a bit too quickly. I wouldn't really want to compromise on the spa though. Apart from that, I'd actually prefer a smaller hotel.
Can I ask what the occasion is for your trip to Vienna?
One hotel that comes to mind is Sans Souci. I stayed there last year and really enjoyed it. The location is great if you like to head out for a walk in the evening – it’s right by the MuseumsQuartier, and you can easily walk into the city centre from there.
What I liked most was that it had a bit more personality than a lot of the bigger hotels. It’s stylish without feeling too fancy or formal, the staff were really friendly, and there’s a nice spa area as well.
The occasion is our wedding anniversary, that's why I'm also a bit pickier than usual this time. MuseumsQuartier and the area behind it would fit well location-wise. In the evenings we also want to head out on foot and go have a drink somewhere. We're not really looking for this classic grand hotel feeling necessarily, something less formal would be preferable to us.
Regarding the spa, I'm still curious. In the pictures, the pool looks surprisingly long. Were you really able to swim a few laps there, or is it rather meant for relaxing?
A massage would maybe also be something for the wedding anniversary. In case you booked one there, did that still work during the stay or should one rather reserve beforehand?
Oh, how nice! Congratulations to you both! 😊 There are lots of bars and restaurants just around the corner, so you’ll have plenty of choice for going out in the evenings. The hotel also has a lovely restaurant itself, in case you feel like having dinner there one night.
And the pool really is that long! You can actually swim a few laps, it’s not just one of those tiny hotel pools where you can barely move.
I haven’t had a massage there myself, so I’m not sure how easy it is to get a last-minute appointment. But the spa area is really beautiful, so I’d imagine the treatments are lovely too! 😉 Since it’s your anniversary, I’d probably book ahead just to be on the safe side.
Go to Bar Blaue. Really nice cocktails and interior seating, I believe it's possible to book online but not a big wait if walking in
The Blaue Bar I didn't even have on my radar until now. For the evening, that actually sounds quite fitting. How full was it around when you were there? We'd actually rather not reserve for that. If one usually gets a seat like that anyway, we could just see when we drop by there.
