I think the better question would be who is best female musician or performer.  You do not have to be an elite singer to be great.  There is no question in my mind that Billy Joel is best musical talent of all time but he was not an elite singer.  On the female side, my favorites are Pink and Kesha.  If we talking about pure singing, Whitney Houston was probably the best.

+SB for mentioning Pink. She doesn't sound like much on records - and I wouldn't call myself a big fan - but have you ever tried to get tickets to a Pink show? Fughedaboudit!!! That girl sells out arenas across the country in seconds - women love her!

Yeah, she is great, especially the older stuff.  I do not think her voice is very good but her style of music is kind of kick ass, which is cool for a female.

Dead thread - but holy fuck how does someone so definitively belief Billy Joel, of all fucking people, to be the "best musical talent of all time." Like, barring any obvious consensus of critics or whomever that Billy Joel is clearly a very distant way from such a lofty title, how does one listen to Billy Joel and say "yep this is where music peaked." Baffling.

I agree with the earlier statement that you have to evaluate female singers on their performance because a good record producer can hide a lot on an album. I mean, we live in a world where Cardi B has a Grammy, right? So based on singers I've seen live:

  • Sara McLachlan
  • Colbie Callat
  • Dido

Tons of potential in Olivia Rodrigo, but I have yet to see her live and her story is still being written anyways.

strongly agreed about your comment on Whitney, but i do not agree with all the comments saying Adele is the best singer (in mainstream music) right now. she leaves... much to be desired during her live performances, the only place to really tell who can sing or not. to be honest, she could still do better on the records too.

for me, the best singer still active right now is Kelly Clarkson by FAR (even if I think she hasn't put out a superb record in a while). the others truly cannot compare to kelly.

EDIT: actually i change my answer. the best singer alive right now is Kelly Clarkson AND Celine Dion. i'm slightly more familiar with Kelly's music but love Celine too! and she is the real deal live, as anyone would know.

I don't really consider Whitney a notch above Ella Fitzgerald. Ella forgot the words to Mack the Knife, then made the rest of the song up and THAT live recording got published and put in the Grammy Hall of Fame. Legendary Ella.

Be excellent to each other, and party on, dudes.
