Why don’t we make assault rifles cost $25K

-still legal under 2nd amendment. No need to tamper the law.

-people who really love guns can save up their entire lives to afford one. Similar to me saving up for a Porsche.

-psycho kids with a grudge between the age of 15-30 can’t afford to get their hands on them.

-Gun manufacturers profit tremendously.

-Mandate that a portion of the proceeds goes to fund victims of gun violence or mental health.

Everyone wins. Discuss.

Actual "Assault Rifles"/Full auto capable rifles already cost ~$15k-25k to purchase in the US, in addition to several other hurdles to acquisition. AR-15s and other semi-automatic rifles are simply not the same thing.

An overwhelming majority of guns produced across the world today are going to be semiautomatic. With the only real exceptions being: Bolt action rifles, certain shotguns, and some old west revolvers/lever guns.

Pricing out the ability for an everyday American citizen to purchase one is in essence restricting their 2nd amendment right. In the same way that high poll taxes infringed on the right of individuals to participate in the election/voting process.

Also, handguns still make up a far higher percentage of gun related deaths. So that would really only put a small Bandaid on a massive and complex issue. School shootings and mass shootings overall, are horrible atrocities. However, a ban on guns/restriction of them is not going to be a widely effective solution in a country with more firearms than its populace. I can understand the sentiment in thinking it is the right fix, but it's a relatively naive one (which would just serve to further the detrimental divide this country has been experiencing).

  1. Look at how much actual transferrable assault rifles cost because that alone makes this post and you look silly. Your proposal would actually discount many of these items so I suppose in those instances I actually support this!
  2. An AR-15 =/= assault rifle no matter how many CNN/MSNBC clowns say they are the same thing. Also, the vast majority of shootings are committed with handguns so you're proposal achieves next to nothing.
  3. I guess you just hate the idea of regular Americans being allowed to defend themselves and exercise the same rights as the rich? How progressive.
  4. On the comment that it would mean more profit for manufacturers - did you fail high school economics or are you just trying to instigate with such a profoundly absurd comment? By that logic why doesn't every restaurant charge $1,000 for a cheeseburger? It'll just make them more money!

2A is pretty cut and dry English - "shall not be infringed" - and the government stepping in to make the cost of exercising literally the 2nd right enshrined in the BoR is a pretty blatant infringement. Ever heard of poll taxes?

The topic line of this post pretty much confirms that which ever firm hired this monkey should fire them immediately.

Would it kill you to do like 30 seconds of research on anything before you unleash your fingers on the keyboard?

Unsurprisingly this is a problem the vast majority of anti-gunners have, because if they had the slightest idea what they were talking about or advocating for they would realize how indefensible their position is in the first place.

Hey, bigot, did you miss the memo that acknowledging reality is racist?!

I'm simultaneously amazed and unsurprised they removed your comment. Mods are getting trigger happy again.
