Would you still get a MacBook Pro?
I came across a counterintuitive article. In this article, Consumer Reports says don't buy new MacBook Pro. Surprisingly, product-testing publication said the following:
In three consecutive tests, one 13-inch MacBook Pro model ran for 16 hours in the first trial, 12.75 hours in the second and just 3.75 hours in the third, the publication said of the recently released line, which starts at $1,499.
The problem is in its inconsistent battery life. This is a departure from the norm, however.
But the real question is: Will you still get a MacBook Pro anytime soon? Any thoughts, monkeys?
I have the last model before the touchpad was released and I think I am done with MacBooks. The new Windows OS is just as aesthetically pleasing and it better compliments most of the programming stuff I want to learn outside of work. MacBookPros are still recognized as one of the best laptops around, but the competition has become worth looking into. I haven't done the research myself yet, but when I buy my next laptop I am going to see what are the best specs money can buy instead of fanboying myself straight to the apple store like I did last year.
Ya, I heard Apple products aren't good for excel. So you are basically buying Apple products for entertainment purposes.
Apple products are terrible for Excel. You can do a lot of the same stuff but the shortcuts I use on a windows are all different or nonexistent so it takes a lot longer.
I usually use the apple for iMovie, iPhoto, and Garageband related personal projects. Pages also shits on MS Publisher.
Try running the solver tool in Excel for Mac, it's pathetic.
Love my older MacBook Air and agree, Apple makes slick products. But Windows 10 and the Surface are enough to bring me right back to Windows. I'd still get an Ipad over an an Android tablet, but I prefer Roku to AppleTV, high end Android phones to Iphone and a real watch to an IWatch.
IMO, Apple was smart to build a cult following. Allows them to bleed their supporters with incremental upgrades every year, while remaining behind the curve compared to their competition. Since most people use computers to surf the internet or send emails they really aren't hurt by a lagging, but nice looking, technology provider.

Just replaced my work laptop with a MS Surface as well, it's amazing. Windows 10 runs incredibly smooth, screen is insanely high-res, and (important for consultants) it is light enough to work on while an airplane is taking off / landing.
The pen is kind of a gimmick to me but it's nice to have.
Can you use excel to any significant extent? Or is it just useful for word processing/showing powerpoints/etc.?
I use Excel daily on it and it runs well. The default keyboard has one of the annoying dual-purpose f-command keys that primarily run volume / music pause / keyboard brightness. They make up for this, though, but making the "function" key that switches between the f-commands and volume controls a sticky key, so you only need to hit "function" once and then have full f-command functions until you decide to turn it off. The only major limit I encountered is that I can't use "Page Up" and "Page Down" functions to quickly toggle between worksheets without turning off the F-Keys, and haven't found a quick way to do it other than clicking between sheets. It took about a week to get used to it but now I'm as fast as always.
In PPT, this will sound strange but I've found it harder to make my decks 100% polished. The screen resolution is so insane that I can't pixel-align like I could on my old laptop because the pixels are too small to see. Just have to get aggressive with the standard alignment commands in PPT to ensure things are absolutely aligned.
Too pricey for a laptop. The 27in 5k Mac (if you can justify one) isn't far off on price, especially if you wait a year.
Macs are great if you're only browsing the internet. If you need to use the office suite/use hotkeys to make everything faster, windows OS is significantly better. My current macbook is setup via bootcamp to boot into windows or OS, and honestly, I use the windows boot 10x more than the OS boot.
I've always had a desktop that I built running windows though. If I hadn't already had a windows CPU, I wouldn't have gotten a macbook.
When you boot with Windows, can you use a Windows shortcuts using a PC keyboard? I just got a MacBook Pro and want to use bootcamp
I think most shortcuts work except for the control+alt+delete for task manager. Other than that I haven't had any bad experience with short cuts.
Yes. If you have a standard keyboard (not the Mac one), you will be able to use the computer as if it were entirely a windows PC. If you use the mac keyboard, it kind of defeats the purpose, because some of the keys are in a different place than when you use a standard qwerty keyboard.
Just bought an awesome Lenovo Yoga 2-in-1 with Win10, 16GB RAM, 512GB solid state HD, 8-9 hr battery life for $1,199 -- comparable MacBook is more than 2x the cost. The Apple premium isn't worth it.
Did you look at other options like zenbooks or Dell xps at all? Starting to do some research and think about whether I want to get a laptop right now

If you're looking at Dell, you can also look at Alienware. Refurbished they are actually somewhat cheap/good value for money.
Bought a refurbished MacBook Air from 2012 for $450 bucks. So worth it. If I were buying new I would do a PC.
Macbook def has great aesthetics, battery life, and is incredibly light. But if i were to buy a new laptop again, itd be the Lenovo Yoga, as mentioned earlier.
Same if not better qualities (maybe not that Apple preconceived aesthetic), in similar price range and greater use in finance

I just went through this about a month ago. Had a macbook air for several years that I ran parallels on (for whenever I needed excel). I don't really need a mac, but I like the apple ecosystem and had grown to used to the OS. It was time for an upgrade and I was really torn between getting a macbook pro or a PC laptop. Ultimately, I went with the PC. I've had it for about a month now and I don't miss my mac one bit.
For me, the things I use a laptop for are work, surfing the internet, listening to music and storing photos. That's it. I may dabble in a game here or there but that's all i use a computer for 99% of the time. If you're anything like me, it just doesn't logically make sense to get a mac. The functions I need don't justify the price premium that mac charges. I was basically getting a near top of the line touch screen macbook pro (got the RAM, HD upgrade, etc) that priced out to be nearly 3k once you include applecare and tax, just so i had a strong enough computer to ensure that i could run parallels smoothly and be able to do excel/run bloomberg simultaneously. I was paying extra just so I could basically have the apple ecosystem and run windows. the pc laptop i got ended up being 1.2k and it runs everything i need just fine. i don't really miss having the mac os that much (i still have an iphone and ipad). ultimately i can't do things like airplay with my apple tv or imessage from my laptop, but turns out i don't really miss those features that much
What model/brand/specs did you get? I'm also looking for a new laptop. A laptop that can run excel /BB has got to be good
yes, I would definitely prefer Apple products and Macbook Pro is no an exception.
I'm loving my new Mac Book Pro with the Touch Bar! I'm writing this post with it.
I like the MBPs and would definitely buy one again, but as someone already said, it is not the best computer for office related stuff, so unless you're in a creative field or so, your MBP will solely be for entertainment/personal use.
Had a mac throughout most of college. Just recently went back to a PC and 100% would never go back to a Mac at current prices.
Just went through the process the other month and debated getting a MBP / insert brand of choice Windows based laptop. Ended up saying screw it and went with building my own PC. Top of the line and set me back ~1800 including a quality monitor.
Couldn't justify the MBP pricing as much as I loved the ecosystem for all my apple products.
I hate the new touchbar because of how often I (and most of us on this board) use the physical function keys in Excel. I run Windows Excel and other work related software in a VM on my Mac so I can use the best of both worlds.
Apple laptops for me have always been about the aesthetics and function. Lightweight, thin, and appealing to the eye, while performing just as well as other laptops (although at a higher price point). Given how other manufacturers have quickly caught up or surpassed Apple in those areas, I would be more open to looking at alternatives but it would have to overcome a two main hurdles.
The trackpad. Apple has one of the nicest trackpads that feels natural, can detect when you're resting your palm, and other unintended movements.
Apple ecosystem. Although I have just about every one of their main products (iPhone, iPad, Macbook Pro, Apple TV), this is quickly becoming a non-issue as there are many alternatives that works across all platforms. The main thing sticking point left for me on this is iMessage. The convenience of being able to just type a message and chat on my laptop makes life easier when I'm at home.

Dumb thread. If a product is defective, don't buy it. It doesn't mean the entire line sucks though. I own a 2015 MBP and love it. I'm sure I'll get a new model eventually too. Probably won't buy one with a bad battery.

Lenovo just announced their Thinkpad x1 carbon 2017 and I am tempted to buy it just because, even though I probably still have 1 or 2 years on my current laptop

I have never been an apple fan with the exception of iPhone. Always seemed like you could get more bang for your buck with just about anything else.
