WSO Quality-We Need Age Limits

Idk if man but these WSO troll post are getting out of hand nowadays.  Idk if guys are out there depressed or what, but it is really lowering the quality of convo on here. I realize most posters are probably early-mid 20s but we gotta do something about the quality around here.

I was going to create a similar topic.  WSO made a good first step in eliminating the anon feature in the off topic forum. They should take it one step further and limit new accounts from posting in the off topic section until they have a certain number of bananas.  IF WSO implements this approach, the idiots and assholes will have to work harder to earn the ability to create a topic.

I don't really like either of those ideas that much, I find that type of feature to be extremely annoying on Reddit

Is there actually a feature like that on Reddit?  All of the moderators make their own rules.

I agree - I wish I saw this site at 16 or even 10, bruh if I was 5 and found WSO I know I would have been a billionaire by now.

WSO already has 7 types of negative feedback:

- Monkey Shit for Not Helpful

- Monkey Shit for Low Quality

- Monkey Shit for Inaccurate

- Monkey Shit for Spam

- Flagging for Spam

- Flagging as Rude or Abusive

- Flagging for Low Quality

Right but what are the actual consequences of any of those when you just create a new account and go from there?  Those negative feedback options only matter if you assume that someone (a) cares about their reputation on the site and (b) is locked into their account, and unable to spam new ones.

Agree with the sentiment. It is really disappointing that there are so many trolls out there. Detracts from the efforts some members put into actually providing helpful guidance to people who want or need it.

I think WSO is actually banning many of the troll accounts but it’s way too easy to make a new one. They need to do one of the following:

1) Make people confirm their email address before commenting / posting

2) Limit the number of comments / post an individual can make in a day or hour

3) Limit post/comments for new users

4) Automatically ban people with a certain SB/MS ratio

Literally anything to clean up the off topic section

Literally on WSO right now:

Alright, let me ask a question about your question. What about the quality gauge on the other forums of WSO? Is it just off-topic that's bothering ya'll? Isaiah nailed it, spam them with flag notifications and they will get yoinked pretty quick.

Here's a random one-off for ya: if you're so devoted to the idea of a walled garden type place, why not set up a subreddit as mentioned by another user and make it invite only? Hand pick your peeps from here on WSO to invite over and see if you can't cultivate more threads like Criterion's book club thread which I'm guessing is what you're looking for.

Another one-off: you're talking about depression and that topic has seemed to be somewhat popular of late, so why not petition to set up a mental health / recharge subforum here on WSO? Or again, either start your own subreddit or happily drop names of other forum spaces out there that already exist to serve that goal.

But what do I know? Eat Domino's.

I dont necessarily care that much and I don't have any friends on here. Saw a post that literally said s should husbands be able to rape their wives for the good of the country and it was obviously a troll post. But there lots of those like the one that thinks black ppl are violent and dumb

Fair enough. I can agree about some of the posts just being way off base and if you're not on here all that often and you come back from a brief hiatus and that's what you see? Yeah, I can understand being put off. You're not alone either in feeling like maybe there's something missing overall in terms of a higher level of discussion like we used to have around the after hours poker games with a bottle of whisky on the table.

What I see is two possibilities: a place for the new and younger to try and glean some advice so we can let off-topic be a free for all. Or another more selective community as mentioned. Or maybe even both.

They ban the accounts very quickly but the trolls remake the accounts almost instantly because they don’t need a new email address. Next time you’re reading a troll post look at their account history, it’s typically brand new

Think there are actually two issues:

1. High School kids posting.

2. Analyst 1 or 2 who now thinks he or she knows the entire financial industry. Yes, this group often has some good advice on recruitment but often really bad and misguided advice on career progression, financial industry outlook - nearly as bad as prospects on certain topics yet are even more hard-headed and confident than a 16 year old kid posting.

haha I agree who would have thought of that? I mean really. Damn bro.

Look at you cucks begging for more censorship! Just ignore the shitposts, pay them no mind and they'll stop. Or if they don't, what do you care? If you are an adult, surely you can control what you choose to read and choose to click on when browsing this site. Really alarming to see more of you clamoring for more hall monitors to protect you cuz you just can't help yourself from engaging with shitposters any longer

If all folks see are the shit posts eventually the professionals with real advice will leave.

I would give this 100 +SB if I could.

Anon posts are absolutely killing WSO and it has gotten out of hand in recent years. When I first joined (many moons ago) people had the decency to only use anon when they were sharing really good company/personal/career info. You used to look forward to anon posts because you knew it was good info. But now people use anon for everything because they're, well, cowards. If WSO got rid of anon posts the quality of these discussions would increase 100%

I thought the anon feature eliminated in the off topic forum but may be that only applies to creating a topic.  Recently, I saw a topic loaded with anon comments.

This has been an issue for years, the problem in my opinion, has a core issue that is really tough to solve:

There is ONE particularly hot button topic for this demo that will always get traction but also attracts some of the worst of society in addition to those with legitimate concerns: diversity recruiting. So you get these comments that legitimately discuss the administration of racial or sex-based recruiting and they’re mixed in with straight up racist or sexist comments. The lines blur, and suddenly the whole topic becomes super muddled and not value-add at all. This will always get traction because it directly affects the majority of users of this site : aspirational bankers.

So now you’ve got prime troll topics and bait that will always ALWAYS get taken. This brings troll-type users to the site who then of course post more topics. it also brings non-finance people (e.g. the dude who is always a South Park reference like skankhunt42 or memberberries) who LOVE to talk about these topics and will write out long arguments that are upvoted because they make surface level logical sense and aren’t really questioned other than that one dude who likes to be a punching bag (drump or something)  this devolves into a shouting match between a bunch of non-verified and or anonymous accounts (remember this is on-topic for any board bc recruiting)

anyway - all this completely impedes WSOs ability to become a legitimate two-sided market. WSO adds value by taking advice from financial veterans and making it available to aspirational bankers. So it creates the another sticky hurdle (not wanting to be associated with this kind of content) to the myriad other regulations stopping actual finance professionals from commenting.

long story short - you get a website with a majority population  asking for advice, with very little advice supply to give because the users you need to incentivize to participate are actively pushed away by sidecar content that the majority population can’t help themselves but create.

In the last 2 weeks I have seen a series of beyond ridiculous, rude zero reason comments towards those of us who are older/have a family/have kids. Lines that should not be drawn on any forum and some of these are "anonymous 22-25 year olds who clearly think they are are rockstars". Which is fine but there is zero reason to explain or try to win your viewpoint crossing those lines. If WSO really chooses to not moderate this stuff, I do not get it do not see the upside.

Totally agree but in all fairness to WSO, they are not going to know about all of the comments.  You have to flag the comment and then the mods should take action but they should do more than just removing the comment.  People who target someone's family should be banned from participating.

NoEquityResearch

Like I mentioned above, the 22-25 year old first year know-it-all analyst crowd can be worse than the 17-year olds.

You are probably right.  Since I have been the target of some of this, I might as well comment further. I don’t normally say anything that is offensive other than a occasional liberal comment.    I rarely ever insult anyone.

As you probably know, most people here are opposed to affirmative action, partly because it personally effects many people on WSO.  Since the main beneficiaries of AA are often black people, it results in a lot resentment towards them from some people here.  And since I sometimes support AA and sometimes show empathy towards black people, these people direct ridiculous racial comments at me.
