Healthcare Technology in China

I've been following and recently, had another very interesting conversation at CES regarding China opening up their healthcare private sector to foreign intervention. I've worked in healthcare technology for a long while now and I'm curious about opportunities overseas for those who do not speak Mandarin.

I hear there are a bunch of American players flooding the marketing and competing, but haven't been able to track down a credible information source. Are there business units paying a premium for healthcare technology subject matter expertise? I heard that data integration is the biggest issue, but are there other areas that are sorely needed in the Chinese Healthcare System?

If anyone has any intel here, I'd be extremely gracious. I'll be networking at HIMSS this year to meet more of our friends overseas, but I'm impatient and was hoping I could find someone on WSO to point me in the right direction.

Maybe @earthwalker7" ?

Very lucrative but challenging space even for the global market leaders. Penetrating market is difficult / impossible without a local player (JV, partner) and a local distributor (which has its own set of ... challenging cultural practices). Then you get into localized markets and competitive landscape, completely different healthcare system and HCIT procurement process, KPIs etc. Different and completely difficult regulatory environment. Tendency of hospitals to pay up front at build but not for maintenance / software. Competition includes copycat local players but also sophisticated but inexpensive East Asian providers incl. Taiwan, SoKo, Japanese all of whom could wipe the floor with the US majors in terms of local market knowledge. Customer base differentiation including private/public, Tier 1/2/3/rural hospitals. Keep in mind, no GPs or specialist doctors outside of hospitals and essentially no hospitals outside of government.

Might be a longer and more involved conversation but happy to have it with you over PM / email. Before being a banker I was a healthcare-focused strategy consultant for 5 years as an Expat in China and did several HC and HCIT M&A and greenfield strategy projects.

Be excellent to each other, and party on, dudes.
