Masters of Mathematics and Quantitative Finance at UTS

Hi all, first thank you for reading.

29 year old ex white shoe lawyer here, thinking of completing the masters of quantitative finance and mathematics at UTS in Sydney, Australia, and have several questions in regards to this.

1. Can I get some insight into the typical potential avenues of employment? Does it consistently provide avenues into the following? prop trading firms, trading at investment banks / hedge funds / standard commercial banks? Is Jane St / Citadel a possibility with this qualification? Would any of these types of companies / institutions scoff at such a qualification? Are any of these types of companies more suited to this degree that the others?
2. Is there anything that jumps out as lacking in this course in terms of maths, statistics, computer programming, pricing analysis? The course appears a little light on computer programming in my view but would be good to get some thoughts from others.
3. What is the standard life cycle of an employee with this qualification? Is there scope for being hugely successful in the trading world or is the reality that people try their luck at the big money for a few years and then find themselves working in some quantitative function at a government / regulatory institution on steady pay and more job security not so long after?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights regarding your questions about the Masters of Mathematics and Quantitative Finance at UTS:

1. Potential Avenues of Employment

  • Prop Trading Firms: Yes, this qualification can potentially open doors to prop trading firms. However, it's important to note that these firms often have rigorous screening processes, including math tests and quantitative interviews.
  • Trading at Investment Banks / Hedge Funds / Standard Commercial Banks: This degree can be relevant for roles in these institutions, especially if you have strong quantitative and analytical skills.
  • Jane Street / Citadel: These firms are highly competitive and typically recruit from top schools. While the degree can be beneficial, breaking into these firms may also require exceptional performance in interviews and additional skills or experience.
  • Suitability: Prop trading firms and quant hedge funds might be more aligned with this degree due to the heavy emphasis on quantitative skills.

2. Course Content and Gaps

  • Maths and Statistics: Ensure the course covers advanced topics in probability, statistics, and stochastic processes, which are crucial for trading roles.
  • Computer Programming: If the course is light on programming, consider supplementing your education with additional courses or self-study in languages like Python, R, or C++.
  • Pricing Analysis: Make sure the course includes comprehensive modules on financial derivatives and pricing models.

3. Career Lifecycle and Success

  • Initial Success: Many individuals start with high aspirations in trading roles, and some do achieve significant success early on.
  • Long-term Prospects: The reality is that the trading world is highly competitive, and job security can be volatile. Some individuals transition to more stable roles in quantitative functions at government or regulatory institutions after a few years.
  • Job Security: Working at an institutional firm like a bank may offer better job security compared to prop trading firms, where performance is closely tied to job retention.

Additional Considerations

  • Networking: Building a strong network within the industry can be crucial for landing roles at top firms.
  • Continuous Learning: Stay updated with the latest trends and technologies in quantitative finance to remain competitive.
