does this stuff impact Canadians who already landed their third summer internships but haven’t started yet, like are the re-recruiting domestically.
Dw abt it lil bro, statistically speaking you most likely gonna end at like a CIBC or TD anyways even when the visa situation was good.
Jokes a side this thing doesn’t impact Canadians
.
Yes I work at one the three firms you just mentioned and it doesn’t impact us, buddy
Are your saying these banks are exempt from this fee. We know it won’t affect these banks because they can simply stop hiring Canadian talent. But it affects the dude in this post, who is now forced to only work in a certain geographical market. R u slow? Highly doubt u work at one of these firms.
.
We are all on TN
.
Nah if you this slow you aint "good"
Canadians can still work under the TN category, downside is TN -> Green card is hard vs H1B -> Green card, if you plan on staying in the US long-term. But I won't be surprised if firms reduce the analysts they bring from Canada too since Trump created uncertainty on legal immigration policies.
TN should be available for Canadians to work in the US independent of what happens with H1B. But sponsoring banks likely wouldn’t support you getting H1B, which should allow you to get a GC. If you don’t intend to live in the US forever, should be OK.
One worry though is that the “negative” sentiment around foreign workers may pressure companies to hire domestically.
FYI ‘I was planning to come over, build my resume and return to my country with a top tier job’ doesn’t yield much in terms of sympathy.
Cool it JD
@ OP: No one’s really said that sucks - tbh that sucks. You weren’t given the opportunity set as those who came before you and for that I feel for you. We’re (the US) obviously a beneficiary of high skilled labor from other countries and Trump admin most likely figuring they can juice a bit more top line from big tech sponsors without respect to how it will have downstream impacts for non global orgs.Rooting for you and other smart people who want to come to this country that orgs are willing to suck up the cost (where it make sense) for a more well rounded talent pool
Don't worry, you aren't getting into Evercore with this level of intelligence.
"Canadian shouldn’t be grouped with the Indian/Asian/African"
Dude, Canada is India 2.0 now. The sooner you assume it, the better.
Sorry some mean musings here....
Wonder how much Canada is benefitting from the ability to have shitty left wing policies at home but the ability of citizens to make a relatively easy jump to the US where there is more opportunity and no language barrier.
Wonder how much worse off Canada would be without the ability to train talent in the US and bring funds made in the US to Canada. In some ways, their politicians and citizens never feel the full impact of their shitty policies if you can easily hop over to the US for work.
EDIT: Also a question for the OP and the same thing said another way, is the tragedy Trump and that you have to pay a $100K fee or is the tragedy that your own country's policy have not created enough opportunities for young people to stay in Canada?
“But I do think that maybe, at the very least, Canadian shouldn’t be grouped with the Indian/Asian/African cheap labour trends this policy is meant to prevent”
Lol, this is a Reddit/X level comment.. there is no cheap labor in IB.. you are a non-target middling kid in Canada .. the kids coming over on H1B from India / China are high IQ stars from some of the toughest universities in the world. get off X and Reddit..
the only thing that bothers me is that why can't OP just take a role at a local Canadian PE funds (doesn't matter the size) and learn the ropes there. There are so many bright talents out there in the LS, let alone Canada, that even getting a chance to intern at any boutique firm would put OP in a significantly better position than 95% of undergrads
I thought Canadians can work in the US through the TN visa
Aside from the TN which others have mentioned (actually, if your intent is really to come to the US and eventually move back to Canada, then this visa type is actually very aligned with your current plans as it's nonimmigrant intent), there's still the L1-B. Find the right firm in Canada with a US office(s) and is open to international moves, work hard for a bit, and then work the right opportunity if it comes along.
The challenge is fitting into the right TN category.
Good, that means you need to stay in your own country, canada! Make your own country great. Hope this helps.

Canadians, Singaporeans, Chileans, and Australians aren't affected by this. You're good.
Sorry bud, US jobs are for Americans first, not your training ground to accelerate your Canadian career
The 100k H1B fee is meant to encourage companies to prioritize the thousands of unemployed and highly qualified Americans over random selfish foreign tourists like you. Your plan was a shitty entitled idea even before this policy was in place. No sympathy whatsoever, find a job in Canada.
Maybe if you were competent you wouldn’t need to blame your inadequacy on foreigners taking finance jobs when H1Bs are literally 1% of the workforce… sounds like a skill gap
Signed, an H1B holder
