Advent Soph Summer Internship

Saw that Advent does sophomore summer internships with essentially no return offers, so I can imagine that it is just a resume booster for kids to get better junior summer internships. With that said, it seems like a lot of the people there are diversity so I was wondering if they take anyone non-diversity? Does it require a lot of networking like junior summer IB/PE internships would? What does the difficulty of the interview look like and how to best prepare for it if the apps are opening pretty much in less than a month?

I been doing typical IB technical prep all summer and haven't done a lot of networking with Advent. So any advice would be appreciated.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  1. Non-Diversity Candidates: While many sophomore summer internships, including those at Advent, tend to have a strong focus on diversity candidates, it is not impossible for non-diverse candidates to secure a spot. However, the competition is fierce, and being a non-diverse candidate may require you to stand out significantly in terms of GPA, prior experience, and networking efforts.

  2. Networking Requirements: Sophomore summer internships generally require less networking compared to junior summer IB/PE internships. However, networking can still play a crucial role, especially if you are a non-diverse candidate. Reaching out to alumni, attending events, and cold emailing professionals at Advent can help you get on their radar.

  3. Interview Difficulty and Preparation: The interview process for Advent's sophomore summer internship is likely to include technical questions, behavioral questions, and possibly case studies. Since you've been preparing with typical IB technical prep, you're on the right track. To further prepare:

    • Brush up on private equity-specific technicals, such as LBO modeling and valuation techniques.
    • Practice behavioral questions to articulate your story and interest in private equity.
    • Research Advent's portfolio and investment strategy to tailor your responses.
  4. Application Timeline: With applications opening soon, focus on polishing your resume and cover letter. Highlight any relevant experience, even if it's not directly in private equity, and emphasize transferable skills.

If you haven't done much networking with Advent yet, it's not too late. Start reaching out to professionals now, as even a few meaningful conversations can make a difference. Good luck!

Seems highly unlikely for me then lol. What's the best option if I want to secure some really good brand name for soph summer to aid in junior summer recruiting especially now that the BB ones are permanently shut down?

Most Helpful

Not permanent on BB soph - generalizing (although you technically don't need incoming soph), would rank Large-cap/MM+ PE or HF > Buyside something beyond search fund > boutique IB / Big tech / startup / real research > anything where you are doing something

Focus on learning from great people and network into something. Or focus on making your profile stronger/nailing story/crushing techs, take classes to get your GPA up if needed, you don't need incoming to land any junior seat

Can start networking for SA 27 in next month or two - better use of time

Can’t speak to fortress but Elliott does not take non-nepo undergraduate interns
