Advice for a young kid in CC?
Hey everyone. I’m new to WSO but I’m so glad I found it. Lots of great information and insights on the finance industry as a whole.
Anyways, I’m currently 19, attending my 2nd year at community college. I’m trying to kick ass in all my classes to get the best possible grades to get into the best school I can get into. My goal is to into private equity after college and eventually get my MBA from a top program. Some of my questions are: What advice you would give to a kid like me in my current position? Should I start teaching myself finance since there’s of course no courses here at CC? How should I position myself to succeed? Should I start reading finance textbooks? (I’ve already started taking some online course with NYU professor Aswath Damodaran) What habits should I start developing that may help me along the way? Any and all advice, especially from those who’ve gone to CC and broken into the industry, is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

most important is to get straight A's at CC. no excuses...no fun..no partying....either get straight A's...or you won't get into a good university.
Amazing grades --> good university --> network your ass off to a good SA IB role --> return offer or network your ass off to a good BB / EB FT role --> spin a compelling story abut hustling out of a hole to PE headhunters --> top tier PE
I mean, it's not easy, but it could happen. Good place to start is the 400 investment banking interview questions.

Definitely all of the above and more. Do well in school, network, look for internships... rinse, lather, repeat. :)
Professor Damodaran is a member of WSO - I don't believe he's posted anything very recently, but you should definitely check out his posts, as many are still incredibly timely and insightful.
Also aside from finance textbooks, find yourself some interesting podcasts on finance. There are several threads here where we share our favorite podcasts and books, both finance-relevant along with non-finance ones.

I am not sure if you felt this but don't ever think you are not good enough or sell yourself short. Doubts can occur when messing up a networking session or feeling inferior because you are transferring from a cc or getting a bad grade on an assignment but make no mistake that you can do this and will do what is necessary to succeed. Do everything 100% and don't think of stepping off the gas.
