Advice: How to lateral from Canadian LP to American GP

Hi, I am currently a direct PE analyst at a large Canadian pension fund (think CPPIB, OTPP, OMERS). I was wondering what would be the best ways to lateral into a US GP as an associate? The first route that comes to mind and I have seen with people with similar backgrounds is to go to business school then intern as an MBA Associate. Are there any other feasible alternatives such as on cycle recruiting? Any advice would be appreciated thanks.
