AI in Excel?

Today, I compared an entire purchase agreement using the updated GPT-4o to market, highlighting all necessary areas for negotiation.

The only part of my job that AI can't easily do a basic job at is excel. Does anyone know what AI can do in excel yet?

AI in Excel is evolving, but it still has limitations compared to human expertise, especially in finance-heavy tasks. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what AI and automation tools can currently do in Excel:

  1. Automating Repetitive Tasks: Tools like VBA and Python scripts can automate repetitive tasks such as linking financial statements, accretion/dilution analysis, and data cleaning. These are basic but effective automations.

  2. Excel Add-Ins: There are advanced Excel add-ins like:

  3. Data Analysis and Visualization: AI can assist in creating dashboards, running regressions, and plotting time series data using Python or Excel-integrated tools.

  4. Natural Language Processing (NLP): AI can analyze text-heavy data like earnings calls or 10-Ks to identify key phrases or summarize content, but this is more Python/API-driven than Excel-native.

  5. Machine Learning Integration: While not directly in Excel, you can use Python or APIs to integrate machine learning models for predictive analysis and then visualize results in Excel.

However, Excel remains a stronghold for ad-hoc modeling and handling messy datasets, where AI tools often fall short. For now, AI complements Excel but doesn’t replace the nuanced expertise required for financial modeling and analysis.
