Alternative Asset M&A to MM PE?

I work in a strategic M&A role for an alternative asset manager. I've been at the firm for a few years after a short stint in banking and feel I've learned a lot. However, the role is very narrowly focused (acquiring other asset managers) and due to the long-term nature of the firm, we make very few acquisitions and are incredibly selective. As such, I feel I'm missing the "deal-grinding" experience you can get at MM PE shops. I was wondering if anyone had thoughts on how to leverage this background towards a more traditional PE-style role, i.e. investing out of a fund, board observer seats, etc. that are more operational in nature than this role. I have a good understanding of the space and several years work experience at a good bank and this manager but fear getting too trapped in a niche skillset.
