Am I ghosted?

Hey all! I have been recruiting for a private credit fund (think Ares/Oaktree/Golub) and I had a final round interview on Thursday last week (currently Tuesday). The interview consisted of a 30 minute call with HR about job details, a 30 min chat with a current associate, and then a case study discussion with two principals. I was told from everyone that I would hear back in a few days and the HR lady said "early next week". I just wanted to know if this was normal for an off-cycle recruitment because coming from banking, if we don't hear in a day or two we assume we were rejected.

I would also like to say that the process has been really quick- this was the 4th and final round (already did modeling test and all that) and they have been really responsive throughout.

Hey man, I know the feeling of rubbing your hands together nervously, so to speak. When I was recruiting for my first PE role many many years ago, it took me a long time, over a year to find a job, so I got really used to the feeling.

With this specific opportunity, there's no way to know. On the outside, you may think there's some sort of game theory to be had in asking, or maybe some sort of Schroedinger's offer, where you both do and don't have it but it might evaporate once you "look inside the box" so to speak of calling HR to ask where you are in the process.

The reality is, if they really wanted you, they would have given you the offer quickly. You might be on the backburner if they don't find any candidates, and maybe they're just slow! But, more realistically, you have no offer. I'm sorry to tell you that.

The best thing I learned to do, to keep myself sane, is after every interview, just assume you didn't get it. Just go on with your day looking for new opportunities, doing a post-mortem on your interview of where you could have done better, or just take your mind off of it with some golf or your poison of choice.

Said succinctly, forget about it. Move on. Don't get discouraged and just completely disconnect from this opportunity by assuming you didn't get it. I know it's tough but it's better this way. Good luck man.

Adding onto this, if you made it this far they would extend an offer to you given the right circumstances came up. But more than likely you are not their first choice, and since most people don't pass up opportunities in this field the position is probably being filled by another candidate. A lot of the time you would get an offer immediately (or the next day) after the final round if you were their top choice. But, since the company's first choice is not always reciprocated, they line up "backups" in case the first offer falls through for whatever reason.

I would say that you should be encouraged that you made it that far in the process to begin with if you're new to the recruiting scene. Passing the modeling test and first several rounds of interviews isn't easy for most people and out of hundreds/thousands of applicants you made it that far. Keep your head up and make little tweaks to your interviewing skills and keep up on the modeling and technical sides as well. You got this.

speaking of being ghosted... why did he ghost me?? I thought we had a good time together :(
