Benefit of connecting with an associate before resume screen at a firm that is hiring off cycle but is typically on cycle?

On-cycle firm is hiring now. I have a mutual connect with an associate. Wondering if it will help to get in touch to get my resume lifted to get a first round interview. Not sure if an associate has any pull. His tenure is less than a year... Don't want to waste his time if not. What do you think?

Usually there is a VP level person in charge of the hiring process, at least at the larger funds. Generally they are the ones that take the lead on screening resumes.
