Berkshire Partners Info
I have scoured the forums for details and insights on Berkshire Partners but haven't got much. Does anyone work there or have experience of interviewing with them? Would appreciate any info on what they typically look for in candidates - incl. interview process for former consultants? Thanks!
Berkshire is a top fund, one of the best that hires former consultants IMO. Top quartile returns, virtually no senior turnover, pretty much guaranteed admission to HBS or GSB, and they'll sponsor 1-2 Associates per year to come back after B School. Overall a great place to be.
As for what they look for in interviews, it's everything you would expect. If given an info pack on a potential investment, can you come up with diligence questions you want answered? Can you use Porter's 5 forces to assess strengths, opportunities, etc.? On the finance side, they'll want you to be able to do a paper DCF (no full 3 statement LBO model), and do some top-level market size projections in excel. No real surprises - they'll looking for sharp former consultants who have the consultant toolkit down, show they can think like an investor, and have dedicated the time to learn entry-level finance
What about if you're a banker? I have no idea where to even start with market sizing....
Just speaking broadly about the funds that hire both bankers and consultants, you've got to nail the things you're supposed to nail, and at least adequately stumble through the things outside your wheel house. I.e., for bankers they will absolutely grill you on the details of your deals, the thesis of the buyer, etc., and you'll have to be able to speak to assumptions in the model that they may have even given you (i.e. if the model spits out 40% returns, it doesn't mean it's wrong, but you have to know what's causing that or why it's unrealistic), but on the market sizing and other consulting skill-set type questions, they mostly want to see you have some structure for approaching it and as long as you talk through your thought process without freezing up they will generally help you stay on track or ask you questions that you can use to infer which direction to head in.
