Breaking into US private equity as a foreigner?
Hi,
Currently first year PE at large fund (think KKR, Blackstone etc) after serving time as an ibd analyst at a BB for 2 years in London. Always wanted to work/live in the US however and was wondering if i could use an M7 as a way to springboard myself into a US private equity role (preferably at a large fund again)?
The intuitive answer in my mind should be an easy yes, but it seems like the US PE system is quite rigid in terms of recruiting i don't know how likely the chance of me landing a US PE post mba job competing against others who already have establish relations and are going back to their old firm.
Any insights?

Here's why I wouldn't do it:
1/ There's no guarantee you'll manage to find a role post MBA at a fund of similar quality than the one you are at right now. Each year, a few MBA students that had past BB + MF experience fail to find a post-MBA role at a MF. Senior Associate / VP seats are extremely competitive to get into, more so than Associate roles in London
2/ Cost of MBA in terms of $$$ + lost career experience that will be tough to justify if you want to go back in Europe (you don't need an MBA to go up the ranks in Europe - usually very tough to convert an MBA into a Senior Associate role, you might ended up redoing your Associate years)
3/ If you want to get into a MF in the US, you need to get admitted at Harvard/Stanford/Wharton - not the rest of the M7
However, if that's your dream, go for it - worst case scenario you'll lose a few years / savings but with a top MBA under your belt in the US, you're bound to find new opportunities to do something else than PE at a MF
