Really hard to say, but if the PE firm asked you to join early, then yes, I've seen them help make whole. If you recruited early / asked to join early, feels more debatable.

PE firm covered about 75% of my post-tax clawback, but this was a negotiation point. I was only required to pay back the post-tax value.
