CPPIB Summer Analyst Interview
Dear Monkeys,
Canada Pension Plan has invited me for an interview for the Summer Analyst role (2020, London office). What should I expect?
They're hiring for multiple teams, ( i.e. Private Equity, Real Assets, Active Equities, Capital Markets & Factor Investing, and Credit Investments groups), which means that I have no idea what a case study done by them would look like.
What should be my key focus points technically?
Also, when putting an offer from them side-by-side with an IB offer, how would you guys place them in terms of exit opps / career progression?

Study all of their investment products and strategies. More specifically, they are known as a top pension fund globally with world class investment professionals. Read into the macro trends effecting pensions. Allocation to private equity is dangerously high in my opinion but develop a theory on asset classes as well. I’m pretty sure this fund is like a top exit opp out of BB IB so best of luck.

So, between 2 years IB and then PE or taking am offer straight from CPPIB, what would you choose?
Will CPPIB allow me to laterall within PE or move to HF in the future (if I feel the need for it)?
Also, have you heard anything about junior development there?
You can do anything after CPPIB depending on what you covered. But it is a solid shop in Credit, PE-coinvest and Infra and RE. Exits to PE/HFs are definitely doable. Depends on the bank and your interests but its a tie between solid banks and them as a choice imo. Banks might be better to get a brand name on the cv should you leave finance, get a wider network. CPPIB will have a better lifestyle, directly exposed to investing, more interesting job.

So a for long-term PE career, would you say that there's no downfall when comparing to the typical 2 years IB?
Not necessarily. It is impossible to generalise on different PE shops, banks etc. What you have to realise is that very very few are successful in a long term career in PE and it may be independant from the shop your started at.
Unless the role at CPPIB is in direct PE investing (or co-invest), a move to PE afterwards is unlikely. If you do other asset classes (eg. FoF, equity), you will more or less specialize in those areas. Credit/fixed income may be different, but I don't know the space that well.
BB IB generally sets you up better for a role in PE.

Ah so it must be with Dartmouth. I had it last week - very relaxed. More to confirm interest in role so typical questions like tell me about yourself, why CPPIB and role. Also have a deal or two to speak about and you should be fine

For anyone lurking around looking for answers: - 3 rounds (2 at Dartmouth, 1 AC) - AC is basically 2/3 round interviews at CPPIB - First round fit only (15 min) - 2 round in depth fit + some technicals (haven't done it yet but not expecting heavy technical) - AC will be in office and managed by CPPIB
Look into why the fund, their investment style, what they do, etc... Good answers to those will probably get you to the final round

I had the first round only, but at the end she walked me throught the whole process and what to expect.
According to Dartmouth they should be getting back to me this/next week.

Interview went well (in 15 minutes it was really a minor interest confirmation) and have since emailed them twice and received no replies.
