CRE Capital Markets to PE

5 years of experience in Commercial Real Estate Asset Management and Capital Market advisory at one of the top 5 firms. Only a senior analyst at this point.

Slow deal flow, and looking for more experience in buyside as my family business that I will take over in 3 years is in acquiring regional businesses and real estate (think $80M AUM)

What would your advice be in making this transition?

Not going to be an easy transition even with b-school. If you're taking it over in 3 years you will just *maybe* have landed LMM PE by then, even with the best possible path.

I would lateral to something feasible from your current job (probably RE-focused... maybe your family can help you land LMM RE PE) and learn for a few years. PE is going to take several years to skip into.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are a few steps you might consider:

  1. Leverage Your Experience: Highlight your experience in Commercial Real Estate Asset Management and Capital Market advisory. This is valuable experience that can be beneficial in a PE role.

  2. Networking: Start networking with people in the PE industry. This could be through LinkedIn, industry events, or mutual connections. The WSO Networking Guide can be a great resource for this.

  3. Education: Consider furthering your education. This could be through a CFA, MBA, or other relevant courses. This can help you gain the necessary skills and knowledge for a PE role.

  4. Tailor Your Resume: Make sure your resume highlights your relevant experience and skills. This could include deal-making, financial analysis, and any other relevant skills.

  5. Practice: Prepare for potential interviews by practicing common PE interview questions. The WSO Academy has resources that can help with this.

Remember, it's not about the title you hold, but the skills and experience you bring to the table. So, don't let your current position as a senior analyst deter you. You've got this!
