Curious - how is comp at lower MM PE funds

There are a ton of PE shops obviously. I'm speaking about funds that deal with transactions in the $1m-$10m space and then take an active role in managing the business. I find this space intriguing, having the ability to be hands on with building businesses. However, I don't want to harm future career prospects/b school prospects and am wondering how comp compares.
