Currently recruiting for PE, did not receive a return offer from Top BB over summer

Hello,

I am currently in the PE recruiting process from a top firm. I interned at a top BB group this past summer, but unfortunately did receive a return offer. I am at another strong firm and have met with headhunters, but I am concerned that when interviewing firms will see that I didn't receive a return. How much would it impact my chances in the recruiting process?

For context, I don't think I am a bad performer by any means. Not receiving a return offer from the summer was more a function of headcount and at this point 1.5 years ago for a 10 week internship (I have people who I worked with that could vouch for me). In my current job I have worked for 6 months and have strong reviews, which I am hoping can make up for the summer. I was hoping to hear specifically from people in PE who are involved in the interview process who could let me know how they would view this situation.

Thanks.

So let me get this straight. You didn't get a return from a BB SA. But now you are a first year at another BB and you are worried that the lack of return from your old job will impact PE recruiting?

I wouldn't worry too much. The issue of you not getting a return from your old firm is a few degrees removed from your current situation. Although to draw less attention to the SA stint, you should be focusing mostly on the 6 months you did at this BB rather than the 10 week SA.

Also, FYI not getting a return offer due to "headcount" is basically the same thing as not being good enough, unless the firm decided to take 0 interns back.
