Is there a reason you want to do PE besides fitting in? If they are the best in what they do, then I'm pretty sure that you'll find opportunities coming out of that group.
If you want to do PE, go to a more traditional IBD group. Unless it's like GS vs. some no-name tiny market IBD shop (which is not the case), you want to be in a group where you'll be doing deals that allow you to showcase the core skills PE firms are looking for (valuation, modeling, going through a buy-side or sell-side M&A process..) Since you already know it's tough for guys at Lazard that do a similar thing, you should have an idea of how often (or not) PE is an option for GS guys in this niche group.
If you want to be in banking for the long-term and like GS for it's culture (and obvious name and career building reasons), then consider GS for reasons ricottacheese stated. GS seems to allow for internal mobility (no I didn't work there, just had a couple friends and acquaintances and have seen mobility options for them), so if you're good, you should have opportunities to move.

I'm talking about liquid. Rich enough to have your own jet. Rich enough not to waste time. Fifty, a hundred million dollars, buddy. A player. Or nothing.

would take GS and do mobility to IBD after 2 years - there's a well-oiled process in place to let you do that and it happens all the time.

It takes 2 full years for an internal transfer?? I thought it was only 1 year for all BBs
