Does JMI promote internally?

I’ve seen on previous threads that JMI is a shop that promotes within and has an Analyst -> Associate track. However, when looking at company website, it doesn’t seem that there are many (if any) that started as analyst and are now Associate/VP but rather had IB experience and hired on as Associate. I know this is common but curious if anyone knows about JMIs structure and if they give the boot to analysts after 3 years

Context: referring to being hired as an analyst out of undergrad with no FT IB experience.

Avoid. I’ll start by saying that it’s a phenomenal Company with astute investors that have tons of experience in software investing. When it comes to earlier-stage growth software investing, these guys definitely rank up there with the best. Additionally, you shouldn’t have a problem potentially lateraling to other sourcing focused analyst programs (Spectrum, Summit, etc.). They have a solid name in the BSchool world as well - lot of their partners went to HBS/GSB.

That all said, I summered there and avoided like the plague / stared recruiting FT halfway through the internship. In my office, all the Associates and VPs were ex-IB - no one started off as an analyst. And of the prior ~3 analyst classes, only one guy was chosen to move on to the Associate (that’s probably 1/12). Fundamentally, it makes sense why they don’t promote internally - your primary goal as an analyst is sourcing. You’re evaluated on metrics like number of outreach calls. You don’t work on the operating model or the more technical / data heavy cuts. Deals are essentially run by the Associates who have transactional IB experience - that’s not something you’ll get much of at JMI.

Wow very glad to have someone shine light on this. What was the FT process like coming from JMI? I know this could be a whole separate thread itself but did this give any advantages in the FT process coming from JMI/GE/working heavily w software companies for a summer? Naive question yes but not well informed on the pros and cons of possibly choosing this route.

Edit: do you mind shedding some light on GE places that do actually promote internally?
