Economics degree, how to break into private equity?
Hi y'all! I am currently an Economics student (M.Sc.) and I'd like to turn into PE. I have not a deep knowledge in finance, since my degree is more focused on economics in general, but I am challenged to work in PE. What to do you suggest me to do, in order to increase the probability of being hired? Do you think I have any chance, even if I come from Economics? Thnx in advance!
Learn finance, learn PE and figure out how to hustle a position through the back door. It's absolutely possible.
Seeking Advice: recent Econ grad looking for route into PE (Originally Posted: 09/16/2014)
Hi all, appreciate any advice and have a few specific questions. Firstly, just to give an idea, I graduated this summer with a 2:1 in economics from a top UK university. i want to move into private equity, but know this is a medium term career ambition by the nature of the industry. I want to set up the best route to it so I am applying to M&A bulge and boutique as well as M&A consultancy companies from the likes of Bain and Boston to the Big 4 accounting firms. my questions..:
1) Is it possible to break into an M&A IB role without an M&A internship? (I have completed a good internship, though closer to trading) 2) M&A versus consulting for preparing you best and giving you the best PE prospects? 3) As a graduate already, are off-cycle or summer internships out of the question now, or worth a shot? 4) Are corporate finance roles good preparation for PE? Roles in big brands like Lockheed for example
Thanks in advance !
1) only at small boutiques 2) M&A 3) Apply to everything 4) Heck no unless it's corp dev
