Energy PE Funds
Currently an A1 in Energy IB. I like the industry but ideally want to recruit for funds investing in the energy transition or primarily midstream assets. I'm not a big fan of upstream or infrastructure. Whether in NYC or Houston (ideally NYC), what are the most reputable funds out there that have mandates along these lines? Ideally, I'm looking for brand name funds where I can maximize B-school chances and preserve optionality in the event that I move out of energy down the line.
Would appreciate thoughts on the above; I'm not sure if I'm being realistic in terms of what I'm looking for. From what I understand, Blackstone's energy fund fits the bill (bonus points for being in NYC), but a fund like KKR is focused heavily on upstream A&D. Seems like Apollo, Carlyle, Warburg and the like are all pulling out of energy
EnCap Flatrock, Tailwater, GIP and I Squared all fit the bill, however, only GIP (soon BlackRock) will help with B school placement.
Thanks for the names. My impression is that many of these are infra focused, unfortunately. Is it the case that I’m being unrealistic in hoping to find name brand funds focused on midstream / energy transition. I’m not fond of the “impact” funds; seems like a lot of greenwashing BS
The MFs don’t really invest in midstream anymore. They do invest in energy transition (renewables) but do it through their infra funds. If you’re just looking for a brand name fund that invests in renewables, then yes, Blackstone, KKR, Apollo all invest in renewables.
EnCap Flatrock and Tailwater are primarily midstream names. Flatrock is pure play midstream and Tailwater is mainly midstream with some transition/power infrastructure as well
Would look into WP’s Energy team. Team sits between both NYC and Houston (cross staffed, no difference in deal experience between offices) and has probably one of the best cultures at WP (admittedly a low bar, but I do like the people on the team). Mandate is pretty broad, 100% focused on energy transition but looks at things with ESG / sustainability angles including software and services in addition to more project finance / asset intensive stuff. Still have to deal with the legacy O&G portcos the firm is phasing out, but no net new O&G deals. Great b-school placement and will pay for it if you come back as a VP.
This is all great to hear. Much appreciated
Permira just started a transition team. NYC and London
