Excel Test For TCV IR Analyst Role

Just passed my first round interview and was told I'd have the test in a couple days. Have some basic modeling experience. Does anyone know what this might entail? Relatively new to PE recruiting so thought I'd ask, considering since its an IR role and I'm not sure what the difference between those interview processes are.

For an IR (Investor Relations) analyst role at a firm like TCV, the Excel test is likely to focus on tasks relevant to IR responsibilities rather than heavy financial modeling. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you might expect:

  1. Basic Financial Analysis: You might be asked to work with financial data, such as creating summary tables, calculating key metrics (e.g., IRR, MOIC), or analyzing fund performance. These tasks are typically less complex than full-blown LBO or DCF models.

  2. Data Organization and Presentation: Since IR roles often involve preparing materials for investors, you could be tested on your ability to clean, organize, and present data in a clear and professional manner. This might include creating charts, graphs, or tables in Excel.

  3. Cap Table or Fund Metrics: You might encounter tasks related to cap table modeling or fund-level metrics, as these are common in IR roles. For example, calculating ownership percentages, distributions, or fund returns.

  4. Attention to Detail: IR roles require precision, so the test might include identifying errors in a dataset or ensuring consistency in formatting.

  5. Scenario Analysis: While less likely, you could be asked to perform simple scenario analysis, such as showing how changes in assumptions (e.g., growth rates or exit multiples) impact fund performance.

Since you’re relatively new to PE recruiting, it’s a good idea to brush up on Excel basics and practice tasks like creating pivot tables, using formulas (e.g., VLOOKUP, INDEX-MATCH), and formatting data professionally. If you want to go the extra mile, consider reviewing WSO’s Modeling & Valuation Bootcamp or Venture Capital Bootcamp, which cover relevant skills like cap table modeling and fund metrics.

Good luck with your test—knock it out of the park!

Hey, they asked me to calculate IRR, MoM etc. I didn't make it through this particular process, but took an offer at a different firm on the buyside. From what I know about the investment side of PE it wasn't too much different from those modelling tests. Hope that helps!

Thank you!! I have the same test on Thursday and have been recruiting for IR for some time and never heard an Excel test before. Any more insight would be v appreciated!!

Hi can you please give more details regarding this test. I have the same soon and I di not know what to expect. Thank you

Was pretty similar to modeling tests for investment positions at PE firms, got asked to calculate IRR, MoM etc. For me personally it wasn't too bad but just make sure to know the basics

They do technical testing for IR roles? News to me.
