Firm Culture in PE

Ignore title but second year associate at a MM Software buyout. So many mixed reports across the street on firm culture / sentiment towards where people work. I have friends who really enjoy it and some that are miserable and the threads here certainly lean more negative so thought it’d be interesting to collate experiences. Use the below format if you’d like to share

Role: 2nd Year Associate
Firm Size: MM - 10-15 associates
City: SF
Deal Team Structure: 1 Aso, 1 VP, 1 MD / Partner
Portcos per Aso: 2
Live Deals per Aso (platform or Add-On): 1 or 2
Hours: 80-90
Promotion Rate: varies but at least 2
Days in Office: 3-4 unless cranking
1-10 Firm Satisfaction: 7
1-10 Personal Life Satisfaction: 5-6
General Culture Notes: very high expectations everyone plays up and associates handle just about everything execution related but few extremely demanding seniors/VPs and VPs value your time and theirs. Promotion paths are there for those that work through the initial burnout.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, firm culture in Private Equity (PE) varies significantly depending on factors like firm size, leadership background, and team dynamics. Here's a breakdown of key insights:

  1. Firm Size and Lifestyle:

    • Smaller funds (under $500M-$1B AUM) tend to offer better work-life balance. Processes are less competitive, and the pace is slower compared to larger funds or megafunds.
    • Larger funds often mimic the intensity of investment banking, with long hours and high-pressure environments.
  2. Leadership Background:

    • The senior team's background heavily influences culture. Ex-bankers may emphasize detail-oriented tasks like PowerPoint formatting, while operationally focused leaders prioritize execution and strategy.
  3. General Sentiment:

    • Many threads highlight that PE can feel like "banking 2.0," with similar hours and stress levels. However, some firms stand out for supportive seniors who value personal development and mentorship.
    • Firms with a strong culture often have seniors who encourage juniors to leave the office at reasonable hours and respect personal time.
  4. Key Examples:

    • Bain Capital is noted for its excellent culture, with seniors understanding life outside of work and fostering a respectful environment.
    • European funds and some MM shops in NYC ($1-2B AUM) are also mentioned for having better hours (~50-60 hours/week) and a more collaborative atmosphere.
  5. Promotion and Burnout:

    • Promotion paths exist but often require enduring initial burnout phases. Firms with fewer associates (1-4 per team) may offer more visibility and growth opportunities.
  6. Workload and Expectations:

    • Associates often handle a significant portion of execution work, especially in lean teams. Portco management and live deals can add to the workload, with hours ranging from 80-90 per week in some cases.

In summary, while PE culture can be demanding, finding a firm with aligned values, supportive leadership, and a manageable workload is key to a more positive experience.
