Go full time at EB or PE firm?
I have offers from two firms, one is a south western PE firm with $30b-$60b AUM and one is an NY based EB (think Lazard, PJT). PE firm feels less corporate, but it is also largely focused on only two industries. Not sure what group I will be in at EB. PE firm is 100-200 people, EB is 800-1200 people. Which one is a better place to start out as far as learning/career progression? What if I want to switch firms later on? Total comp is about the same at both.
EB for sure
Congrats on the two offers! Before deciding which offer to take, you should sit down and think about what you're looking in terms of team and industry-focus. Is the role at the EB for the generalist team? If so, it'll allow you to look at different deals and find your interests. Starting off at an EB will also give you the flexibility of being able to recruit for a wide range of buy-side firms later on. Not sure what industry the PE firm focuses on and if they have a structured analyst training program (unless its like Vista or BX), but you will be expected to step-in much sooner than later since the majority of your coworkers will probably have some deal experience and since PE firms tend to recruit for associate-level mostly (assuming most associates working there did IB for two-three years before transitioning to PE). Likewise, you need to think about whether you're more interested in doing IB or PE and what your long-term goals are. If you're dead-set on pursuing PE no matter what then joining the PE firm will enable you to do so and you won't have to worry about recruiting later on during your first or second year at the EB. However, if you're unsure on whether you want to do investing straight from undergrad then working at an EB gives you the experience you need to then exit into public markets investing, corporate finance, etc. Hope this helps!
