Has Anyone Else Noticed This?

Anyone else going through / have gone through PE interviews and noticed that the interviewers are always tired? Never make small talk at the beginning or smile and always just want to run through the motions. Is this typical or am I just interviewing at sweatshops?

As one of the people that’s had to interview candidates, I’d say it’s a safe assumption that the person you’re speaking with is simply tired from being on an active deal. There are also plenty of instances where I choose to jump right into things purely because of other things I need to get done. Remember the person interviewing you is likely speaking with 5 other 1st year banking analysts that day on top of the normal work he/she has to get done before they can go home. The first few interviews can be interesting but after a while it gets boring hearing the 15th kid exaggerate about the work they did on a deal (when in reality they were just moving graphics on slides and never touched the model).

I noticed this when I was going through my OCR interviews. One place I was at the people seemed super peeved to be there/tired/kinda mean personalities.

The next place I interviewed the people were much friendlier, and that’s where I accepted my offer. I think the people (and their energy levels) are definitely a proxy of the culture - I prioritized finding good/friendly people during my IB group placements and it turned out pretty well for me in terms of culture/hours.
