Health problems during recruiting? Take a Hiatus? Help
Should I tell my recruiter I am considering taking a few week sabbatical to recover from a health condition before I continue recruiting?
For context I just rolled of of my investment bank as they are not doing particularly well. The fact that I was sick with this same thing last year also likely affected that decision. I was able to recover and my performance reviews were great during the latter half of the year. (This condition should not continue once resolved, it was more of a fluke that it remerged)
Obviously being both sick and having rolled off looks like a massive ding, but its difficult to prepare for these and do case studies at less than 50% capacity. Every time a try to push myself I get worse. And feel Im missing the mark on opportunities because I cant compete in this condition.
I would really appreciate any thoughts as I am in a tough position. Am I, as the kids say, "Fucked"?
One of the things that kept me animated when I was your age was this feeling of urgency that if I didn't get the PE job now, I'd miss the boat, or that any missteps I made, a headhunter would ding me forever. The reality is that there will always be private equity jobs available because it is a mature asset class, and headhunters will always need to place candidates, and so if you are human and honest with them, they will understand. The more games you play with them, the more they sniff them out.
As I've gotten older and had health problems of my own, I realize that there are times you push through and times you do not. When something is unavoidable, you push through. You, however, are in a situation where you have the ability to step back, manage your health, and then hit the ground running. It may present its own unique set of challenges later (recruiting with out a job, potentially?) but there is nothing urgent that you need to do with your career that can't wait until you sort out your heatlh.
I say this as someone whose career path has taken me a few places I never expected and while they were all better places I could have imagined, none of them fit neatly in my predetermined linear career path that I had imagined when I was 1-2 years out of school. All of this said differently, it is ok for you to take the time for your health. Be honest with headhunters when you engage with them and say that while it is resolved, you had to prioritize the health issue, and you are good to go back in the game, and discuss with them from there what your options are for moving forward with private equity recruiting. I hope your health issue resolves soon.
