Help a n00b - PE firms taking over a company

So I'm trying to look into what I'm gonna do for the next forty years and I was reading the Vault guides. It seems like PE firms take over a company either make it profitable and sell it, or dismantle the company and make it profitable in the process. My question is when the PE firm goes the route of deciding to keep the firm profitable, does it have internal consultants or does it hire an outside firm to do the consulting?
