Help needed to decide on fund

Updated

I have a few offers for Associate role. Need to decide by EOD tomorrow.

1) a H&F / CD&R like MM with $5-7B AUM -- culture is intense, shop is growing fast as a result of strong returns, path to SA/VP promo

2) a consultant friendly offshoot (think Bain Cap) with 2-4B AUM -- AUM is growing but slowly, returns aren't great, but culture seems to be good.

3) a FO (PE focused) with a few B AUM -- best culture from what I can tell, likely most sustainable

My background: MBB consultant

What do you think are the pros and cons of each? Which offer would you take?

It really depends on why you want to go into PE and what you want to get out of it.

Is your goal to 'dip your toe' into finance, stay for 2 years, then move onto something else? Conversely, are you looking to grind it out for a career-track role and outsized income along the way (versus most other post-MBB jobs)? The former favors #2/#3 (check the box for your resume, get a few years of outsized income, see if you like the industry), but if you're serious about this as a long-term career, #1 is the clear choice (maximize learning, path to advancement, best brand). PE generally isn't a culture or lifestyle job - while there are certainly friendlier places to work or staffing models that make hours more bearable, there's not really a "chill" version of the job (maybe just #3 but earning potential is often compressed to reflect the scale and opportunity).

Stating the obvious, this one is a personal choice, dependent on what you're seeking to get out of the opportunity and where you see yourself longer term IMO.
