How does PE sponsorship to MBA work?

Incoming Associate to 2-and-out MFPE next month. Curious how B-School process works.

What exactly does "firm sponsorship" mean? Assist in application? Pay for half? Pay for full?

Assuming this sponsorship is only offered to the Associates who are expected to return to same firm as VP after MBA?

What happens to the Associates that do not get offered the VP promote but still want to obtain MBA?

Would appreciate any insight / clarification!
