How to make sure I get in front of Head Hunters for On-Cycle PE Recruiting
Hi Monkeys,
I am a first-year analyst in an M&A Group at an EB (Centerview, Moelis, Evercore, Lazard) in NYC. I understand that most people in my situation do not have to worry about hearing from headhunters, but there are a couple of reasons I believe I might slip through the cracks.
1) I was a lateral hire so I did not go through training with the other first years and am not officially a part of that class
2) I work in a new group that is still pretty small. I am in only the third analyst class since my group was formed, and none of the previous analysts recruited for PE.
I want to go through on-cycle recruiting, but I am worried that headhunters won't even know I exist.
With rumors circulating that HH interviews will be starting in January, I am beginning to become concerned because I have not heard from any headhunters. I want to ask if there is anything I can do to make sure I am properly identified by headhunters? Is it considered poor form to reach out on my own?
Additionally, I have a few friends who are already associates at some of the funds I want to target. Would it be out-of-process to ask them to put me in touch with the HH?
Much appreciated,
Concerned Monkey
#1. Change your LinkedIn title to "M&A Investment Banking Analyst at EB"
#2. On LI, put your personal email and adjust the settings so it's accessible to recruiters (I usually do 1st connections so you can at least filter who you accept so you're not getting spammy emails)
#3. If any of your friends in other groups start getting outreach that you don't get, ask them to forward the email. Just respond to HH, say you're in X group at X bank and would like to be added to their mailing list. HH will be happy to add you. I wouldn't cold email HHs though, wait until you know they've started outreach as they may already have grabbed your email.
If you have friends at your target funds, nothing wrong with asking them to refer you to HH - have them frame it as "Here's Jfc1234, he's in a newer group and lateraled so I want to make sure he's on your radar for on-cycle"
