How would you work with this situaiton?
Hey guys:
I work at a regional shop where a person on the team is close family friend with the top guy at the shop (same regional private school in the families, etc.; though this person is much younger than the top guy). It's a tier-2 city / shop. It's been challenging to work with this person as this person will clog up all talking time at meetings, shoot down any ideas that's different from his own, and generally assume the worst of others he doesn't like (he does like a select handful of people but those are also from relatively well-connected families in our local region).
Are there ways to improve one's situation in a case like this? What would you suggest?
Thanks
I get the negatives, but whats your relationship with him? Are you both at the same level? If yes, is he trying to turn down your ideas to "get ahead" in the company? Also, do you geneiely want to have a better relationship with him or do you just want to acheive some objective and then say "F it"?
In my experience, you should make an effort, but there should be a limit to it, the limit depends on all of the things I asked about above.
Thank you. This person is similar level but more tenure (viewed as close to top guy and will be on good track). I want to get my objectives and not have bad relationships
OP, I think we will need more info. But to start off (and try to be as objective as possible):
-You mention that this person will clog up all the talking time, have strong feelings, etc. How often is he correct/on the right track? Maybe think of all the situations and then how many of those were correct (i.e. a ratio.)
-Have you ever been with him during lunch or when the janitor were cleaning the office; I am curious as to how he treats/sees blue collar workers? If you haven't, do you think he would be nice to them and treat them as equal or think of them as "scum" and treat them like shit?
That’s a tough situation. Could you try excelling in the area he’s not interested in? Say he works on project A and you work on B? I don't really know just throwing out a suggestion.
You just need to show that you are dominant
