I want to be a ski bum
I want to be a ski bum... but I doubt I'd ever really drop everything, effectively destroy my career trajectory and give up my w-2.
That said, I want to get as close to this lifestyle as possible while maintaining a solid role in pe. Are there any notable funds or satellite offices of larger funds by resort towns (e.g., Denver / Vail)? Any insight into these groups would be greatly appreciated.
I wish I knew how to ski, I'd probably kill myself I'm so ungifted on land.
Ive been contemplating this lifestyle forever. Currently at keystone right now.
Redundant intern
Make a few mil and buy a ranch, thats my plan, but boy does the ski bun lifestyle come calling. They got a lot of perks too so its not like you’ll spend all your money on skis, it could be the life.
I quit my job at a UMM fund without a job lined up and became a ski bum this winter. Ended up recruiting while ski bumming and now have another PE job lined up after ski season is over.
Best decision ever.
How much did you have saved up to do this and how much cash did you burn / mo? How did the gap effect your recruiting process? Are you moving downstream for this to have been possible?
My net worth is ~1 mil. I’m 28. Currently burning ~6k per month (have an IKON pass, been bouncing around resorts, staying at semi-nice places, trying to eat out less, bought a touring set, etc.).
My interviewers were fine with the gap after I told them I had an open offer to return back to my old fund / received internal promotion after my associate program. My references backed up this statement.
Yes I had to move down market but surprisingly comp is the same if not better than my old fund. Job market is really hot.
Forgot to mention that I would not recommend someone to do this if they didn’t have a sufficient safety net like myself. It’s always better to recruit while you are currently employed.
A few small VCs are in those areas, only PE shop nearby is Partners Group in Denver.
Can you share any insight on the PGHN denver office? Like in terms of what they cover, associate and mid level experience, culture, comp, etc
KSL are headquartered in Denver and invest across hospitality / leisure. If you want to a be a ski bum, sounds like a good place. Hospitality / leisure DD trips are always good - boss I need to spend a weekend on the slopes / beach to get a feel for the resort.
Lots of family offices in Denver and along the various I-70 ski towns ending in and including Aspen. If you're fine just being like top ~5-10% rich and not like Rich Rich then those are great jobs to get you $1mm/y in your adulthood pre-upper management stuff. I have a friend who works at one of these because every time they have a powder day, they don't have to come to the office until 1pm.
Can you share the names of any of these offices? Do they hire often thru hh?
Also lol 1mm/yr is very comfortably in top 1% of earners
I don't know the details. Sorry. I think you're better off by researching for lists and then doing some drip marketing to all of them to see if you can get them on the phone to talk about hiring.
Yep. I met a guy in Aspen years ago who left New York to join a family office. There are actual stipulations in his contract related to free ski days when it dumps....fucking amazing
You're in the wrong career, just become a ski instructor to HNWI:
"A hundred bucks is the unspoken minimum for a day; on Aspen Mountain, the average tip hovers around $200 to $250. Especially during the holiday season, generous tippers can push $1,000 a day—and while most instructors will say life’s too short to spend a lousy day with a fat wallet, two weeks of dull days can be enough to survive on all summer. After all, jackpot payouts, spoken about in hushed tones, hum to the tune of $50,000."

Aspen is fire to ski / snowboard at (all four mountains are amazing) but the people are the worst. Many of the biggest snobs found anywhere. The people who pay for ski lessons can be super chill, but some of them will for sure remind you of your MD
Edit: With that said, OP I couldnt agree with you more. Currently praying to find my next role out west
Lol that is my lifestyle bro.
Does your firm need aso? I'd be interested in learning more - feel free to DM if you are willing to discuss (I can't DM anon)
