IB to MBA to PE

I'm starting my second year as an IB analyst at a BB bank and considering applying to business schools this fall. Does getting an MBA help or hurt with PE recruiting? I'm not sure where I want to go with the next step in my career, but also don't want to make any decisions that could limit my options down the line.

  1. MBA and PE Recruiting:

    • Post-MBA PE Recruiting: Post-MBA associate positions in PE are fiercely competitive. It's feasible to do the post-MBA IB to PE route, but there are already many qualified candidates with pre-MBA PE experience.
    • Career Aspirations: A lot depends on your career aspirations and the quality of the MBA program you get into. If you aim for a top-tier MBA program, it might provide better networking opportunities and a stronger recruiting platform.
  2. Considerations:

    • Career in IB: If you are considering a long-term career in IB, you might not need an MBA. You can get promoted directly from an analyst position or lateral to bigger banks.
    • PE Transition: Transitioning from IB to PE without an MBA is possible, but having an MBA might provide additional leverage, especially if you come from a top program.
  3. MBA Program Quality:

    • Ensure you get into an MBA program that feeds into good investment banks (IBs) and private equity (PE) firms. Avoid programs where IB or PE recruiting is a stretch.
  4. Alternative Paths:

    • Direct Promotion: If your interest is to be a career banker, you can continue with IB and aim for direct promotion.
    • Lateral Moves: You can also consider lateral moves to bigger banks if you perform well and have a supportive team.

In summary, an MBA can be beneficial for PE recruiting, but it is highly contingent on the quality of the MBA program and your long-term career goals. If you are unsure about your next steps, consider the potential benefits of both staying in IB and pursuing an MBA.
