Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know about sponsorship and opportunities in Infrastructure Private Equity (Infra PE) for students:

  1. Undergraduate Opportunities:

    • Infra PE funds typically do not hire directly out of undergrad unless they have a specific analyst program. Most funds prefer candidates with 2-3 years of experience, often in investment banking (IB) or related fields. This is because these funds are leanly staffed and require hires who can contribute immediately without extensive training.
    • If you’re still in undergrad, focus on securing an internship in investment banking, particularly in groups like Power & Utilities (P&U), Industrials, or Project Finance, as these are highly relevant for Infra PE recruiting.
  2. Sponsorship:

    • Sponsorship opportunities (e.g., for MBAs or further education) are not commonly discussed in the context of Infra PE. However, larger funds or those affiliated with banks or corporates may offer such programs. Independent asset managers, banks, and pension funds often have different structures for long-term employee incentives, such as shares or other benefits, but carry (profit-sharing) is rare in non-independent setups.
  3. Networking and Recruiting:

    • Networking is critical for breaking into Infra PE. Many roles are filled through connections rather than headhunters, though some headhunters like OneSearch specialize in infrastructure roles.
    • Infra PE recruiting is often on an as-needed basis, so there’s less pressure to recruit far in advance compared to traditional PE.
  4. Preparation:

    • To prepare for a career in Infra PE, focus on building technical skills like financial modeling, valuation, and understanding infrastructure-specific assets (e.g., utilities, transportation, energy). Internships in related fields can also help you stand out.

If you’re still in school, aim to gain relevant experience in IB or project finance and start building your network in the space. This will position you well for future opportunities in Infra PE.

BX/ISQ are the only major pureplay infra equity ones I know that sponsor and have a dedicated summer analyst program. KKR used to sponsor but didn't do it last year, so assuming they won't going ahead. Maybe a few other UMMs/MMs that sponsor, but there's also a bunch of firms (incl BX), like Ares, EQT, and others that have infra credit or infra secondaries funds if that's what you're interested in.

I'd recommend starting off with this thread.

OP is asking about programs out of undergrad - so it’s about OPT sponsorship, not H1B. Don’t have 100% clarity on GIP’s analyst program post blackrock acquisition, and pretty sure Brookfield doesn’t have an analyst program in the US, maybe Canada
