Insane comp at Insight

Heard from a friend that principal level people at insight r still pulling ~2 million per year average over next few years despite fund/market performance. How could this be possible/justified if it’s true? Seeking verification because I have my doubts. If that comp is unrealistic, what would it be realistically

That’s not crazy at all if you include carry (big question for Insight is performance). A Principal is early to mid 30s and I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s how much comparable roles at big MF / UMM PE firms make especially given VP 1 is usually $400-600K cash and carry on top of that so even assuming 3-4 years of VP and getting 15-20% increases each year and one lock step change from VP to Principal should get you to $1M+ cash comp. This would be similar in IB as by your mid-30s, you would typically be an MD or the title right below. It’s probably most variable in HF and VC where it’s less of a structured path in terms of years to a profit sharing type of role.

When you say "next few years" that means your estimate is probably based on carry that the VC morons don't realize depends entirely on portfolios that are still marked up at least 60-70% above market value. Insight's venture portfolio during the Covid years was almost as laughable as Tiger's.

TechCrunch in June: "Insight Partners, a double-dipper growth equity and late-stage venture investor, recently reduced its fundraising target of $20 billion to $15 billion after raising a measly $2 billion of the pot." I would expect that target to continue declining as they struggle to raise based on their ridiculous behavior.
