I'm an intern at a fairly small PR firm where the the next youngest person is a 26 yr old associate and everyone else is 40+.
We get along so well that we've become friends outside the office but are hesitant to interact in the office in case someone misinterprets our friendship since he is male and I am female.
Does this at all look bad or are we over analyzing?

For sure over-analyzing, but I think it's more for your benefit than his. At the end of your internship, your Associate will have a say in your review and performance, it'll be easier for the MD/ Partners to take the opinion of the Associate if they view your relationship with him as professional.
Hint: he doesn't want to be your friend.
