Is Canadian PE to US PE even possible?

Is it even possible to land a decent PE shop in the states without going into banking first? There's maybe a total of 3 PE firms that people outside of Canada could know, and transitioning into IB full-time is a mess in itself.

Anyone have a path that they've done, or advice that you could share with the group? How tf do I manage to get into US PE and escape the Canadian tax laws that will bankrupt me?

Yes but its a catch-22; you need to be at one of the reputable PE shops in Canada first, which almost always requires banking first to get in. If you want to do MF or UMM PE, your only realistic shot is to be at Onex, Altas or Brookfield. Otherwise, if you're at a CPP, Birch Hill or equivalent, you have good chances of going to UMM / MM PE also.

Honestly Onex isn’t amazing. I’d say his/ her best bet is to go to Brookfield (most ideal option), OTPP/BCI (they have US offices) or Altas (unless you’re a Harvard grad you need to leave for the states anyways to move up)
