Lateraling from one MF to another.

Starting out as PE Analyst at MF. Is lateraling to another MF possible/common to see on the street? Will headhunters target IB analysts over PE analysts during on cycle? No desire to leave where I'm at - just curious as to how the process works given my IB friends recruiting on cycle rn. Original post did not clarify this as to avoid minute details.

Will be more or less impossible to lateral between PE firms that use the same headhunters.

Quite difficult to do even if they don't unless you have a compelling reason to make the switch (location, strategy e.g. moving from distressed PE to tech growth or something).

Does your program promote to associate? If so I would wait until after the promote - at that point you're considered an experienced hire and can move more easily.

PE analysts do not do oncycle and there are approximately zero lateral analyst spots in MF PE since classes are so small. Even beyond analyst, people generally only go from MF to MF if they are changing location, strategy etc - very little lateraling just for the sake of it
