Learning Key Analyses and LBOs for PE / GE

So I spent a year in LMM investment banking and a couple of years now in a sell-side role as an associate. Because of the nature of the role and the deals I worked on, I didn’t get as deep into LBOs and core technical skills as I’d like.

I’m now looking to move into PE or growth equity and want to sharpen my LBO skills and related analyses. Does anyone have recommendations for in-depth LBO resources (beyond surface-level WSP-style walkthroughs), as well as other analyses I should be prioritizing to be competitive?

To sharpen your LBO skills and prepare for a transition into Private Equity (PE) or Growth Equity (GE), here’s a structured approach based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Mastering LBO Modeling

  • Advanced LBO Training: Enroll in the Private Equity Master Package offered by WSO. It includes detailed LBO modeling and PE deal process training, which goes beyond surface-level walkthroughs.
  • Case Studies: Practice with real-world LBO case studies. Focus on building models from scratch, analyzing sensitivities, and understanding how different assumptions (e.g., purchase price, leverage, growth rates) impact returns.
  • Paper LBOs: Practice solving paper LBOs, as they are a common interview component. These test your ability to think critically and structure a deal without relying on Excel.
  • Multiple Expansion: Check out resources like multipleexpansion.com, which is highly recommended for in-depth LBO instruction.

2. Key Analyses to Prioritize

  • Industry Analysis: Use frameworks like Porter’s Five Forces to evaluate industry dynamics. This is critical for understanding competitive positioning and growth potential.
  • Company Operations: Dive into operational metrics such as fixed vs. variable cost structures, pricing power, and recession resistance.
  • Financial Analysis: Focus on:
    • CapEx and working capital requirements.
    • ROIC (Return on Invested Capital) and its drivers.
    • Free cash flow generation and predictability.
  • Strategic Initiatives: Learn to evaluate non-core business lines, bolt-on acquisition opportunities, and cost-cutting measures.

3. Resources for In-Depth Learning

  • WSO Financial Modeling Series: Includes lessons on LBOs, DCF, M&A, and more, taught by experienced PE professionals.
  • Live Public Training: Attend WSO’s Modeling & Valuation Bootcamp for hands-on experience with Excel, LBOs, and other financial models.
  • Books: Consider reading Investment Banking: Valuation, Leveraged Buyouts, and Mergers & Acquisitions by Rosenbaum and Pearl for a comprehensive guide.
  • Templates: Use the 27 financial modeling templates available in WSO’s swipe file to practice building and refining your models.

4. Interview Preparation

  • Private Equity Interview Bootcamp: This one-day course focuses on detailed LBO tests and case studies, helping you prepare for technical interviews.
  • Behavioral Questions: Be ready to discuss your deal experience, even if it’s not LBO-heavy. Highlight transferable skills like financial analysis, deal structuring, and client management.

5. Practical Application

  • Mock Deals: Create mock investment memos for hypothetical LBO candidates. Include:
    • Positives and negatives of the target.
    • Additional diligence items.
    • A conclusion with a clear investment thesis.
  • Networking: Engage with PE professionals to gain insights into their processes and expectations. This can also help you identify gaps in your knowledge.

By focusing on these areas and leveraging WSO’s top-rated resources, you’ll be well-equipped to transition into PE or GE with strong technical and analytical skills.
